God offends the mind to reveal the heart.
Abraham being told by God to sacrifice his son.

Imagine being an observer when Jesus spits on the dirt to make mud to put on a blind mans eyes.
Naaman’s (a leper but also a captain in the Syrian army) pride was revealed when God had him wash in the muddy Jordan river.
God tells Hosea, “Go take a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry”
What about Job: so the Lord said to Satan, “Behold he is in your hand, but spare his life.”
How about Joseph: sold into slavery, falsely accused and put into gaol, only then did God elevate him because of his obedience in all circumstances.
James on the purpose of tests: “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work , that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:2-5
Paul talking with Titus: “I am filled with comfort, I am joyful in all our tribulation.” 2 Corinthians 7:4
Thank goodness Jesus made it possible for our Heavenly Father to send the Holy Spirit to be our counsellor, comforter and teacher. It is impossible to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit.
“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart. Proverbs 20:27
The lamp requires oil to function properly. Until we are born again and receive the Holy Spirit (oil) our lamps cannot function properly.
