Old Testament Prophecies of the New Covenant

The primary Old Testament prophecy about the new covenant is in Jeremiah 31:31-34 (NKJV):

“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. A parallel prophecy appears in Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NKJV), describing the heart transformation:

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.”

These focus on a future covenant with Israel and Judah, emphasizing internal renewal, forgiveness, and God’s Spirit—contrasting the Mosaic covenant.

New Testament Fulfilment and References

The New Testament explicitly links Jesus’ ministry to this new covenant, first prophesied for Israel but extended to all through the gospel.

    “Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.‘”
  • Hebrews 8:6-13 (NKJV, quoting Jeremiah 31 fully):

COVENANTS GOD MADE WITH ISRAEL INCLUDING THE NEW COVENANT TO COME

God made three covenants with Israel. The Abrahamic Covenant and the Davidic Covenant have been partially fulfilled but the New Covenant is future.

The Abrahamic Covenant: outlines the exact borders Israel is to possess; the nation of Israel has yet to encompass these specific boundaries (Numbers 34:1-12).

The Davidic Covenant  is the promise that God made to David that David’s heir would sit on the throne of Israel. Jesus is that heir, but He has yet to take His physical, political birth right (2 Samuel 7).

The New Covenant: It outlines the promise that Israel as a nation will return to God and worship their Messiah. These covenants will all be fulfilled during Jesus soon coming 1000-year reign.

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke… For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts.
