RELIGIOUS FREEDOM BEING ERODED IN AUSTRALIA

In Australia, religious freedom is being eroded. Whether it’s restrictions on what the Bible teaches about sexuality and gender, employees being fired for expressing biblical views, attempted murder of Christian leaders or firebombing of Christian church buildings — Christianity is under attack in Australia.

Religious liberty — the ability to live out our Christian faith in private and public without penalty — is the most fundamental of all human rights.

Human rights exist only because God exists and has made humanity in his image. We’re special, having infinite dignity, value and worth.

That’s why human rights are “inalienable”. They come from God — not human governments. But remove Christianity from society, and the basis for all other human rights is destroyed (see “10 Reasons Our Human Rights Come from Jesus“.)

Christian liberty recognises the right of each individual to “seek God… and find him” (Acts 17:27). Discovering God through his word is life’s most important privilege – an endeavour granted to us by God.

The Bible explicitly links freedom of religion with the gospel. In 2 Timothy 2:1–4, Paul urges prayer for “all those who are in authority”. Why? So that these authorities don’t hinder Christians from living a godly life and sharing the gospel with others. As Paul writes, this “pleases God our Saviour, who wants everyone to be saved”. Religious freedom has eternal consequences.

We are fast approaching the time of Jesus Christ return to Earth to restore righteousness and rule and reign with the glorified Saints. This is necessary to fulfil the covenants God made with Abraham. Isaac and Jacob when He set up His nation , Israel to fulfil His purposes. This little nation is the centre of world events with most of the nations surrounding it intent on its destruction just as the Bible says it will be prior to Jesus return to restore righteousness.

“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” Zechariah 12:2-3

These other passages also portray Jerusalem as a spiritual and geopolitical flashpoint in the latter days:

  • Zechariah 14 → The nations gather against Jerusalem.
  • Ezekiel 38–39 → Invasion of Israel in the “latter years.”
  • Joel 3 → Judgment of nations for mistreating Israel.
  • Isaiah 29 → Nations attacking Jerusalem are defeated by God

GREAT OUTCOME FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN OZ

Israel Folau says he has been “vindicated” by Rugby Australia’s apology and says he is now “looking forward” to the federal government enacting legislation protecting the right to religious expression. 

In the video below posted to his website, Folau appeared with his wife Maria beside him and spoke of his reaction to the confidential settlement with Rugby Australia on Wednesday.

“We are extremely pleased with the settlement reached today,” he said.

“With today’s acknowledgement and apology by Rugby Australia we have been vindicated and can now move on with our lives to focus on our faith and our family.”

Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) played a significant role in the settlement and Martyn Isles in particular is proving to be God’s man for this time in leading ACL.

God has used Israel Folau and this incident with Rugby Australia to achieve two of His purposes.

The first to get Scott Morrison in place as the Prime Minister of Australia. The Folau incident occurred just prior to the election. It galvanised Christians and some non Christians to vote for the conservative party. The fact that Israel, possibly the best rugby player on the Australian team, could be sacked because he quoted Scripture on Facebook about God’s position on gay marriage, made many realise that it was wrong, and they could not support the opposition party that supported it.

The second is the vindication received today just before the government enacts legislation to protect the right to religious expression. It must influence the government to ensure others like Folau are not persecuted for their faith.

I hope this demonstrates to all Christians the importance of standing up publicly for Christ and His values regardless of the cost.
