In Matthew 16, Jesus is having a conversation about His identity with Simon Peter, and Jesus asked him an all-important question: “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” And he got it right.Getting this question right is both the quintessence of salvation and the starting point for an eternal journey. You are saved when you come to know and believe in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, but that is only the beginning of your relationship with Him. When Simon correctly identified who Jesus was, Jesus identified who Simon was. He said, “I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.” From then on, Simon was known as Rock. That’s what petros, or Peter, means in Greek. “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 ESV What changed in that moment wasn’t who Peter was but rather his view of who he was. Jesus said he was a rock. Suddenly Peter could see the man he really was. Mind you, when it looked like his world was about to end, he denied Jesus three times just as Jesus said he would. Our journey will be no different. There will be times we need to repent and ask God for His forgiveness, which He freely grants. Knowing God is paramount to finding out why He made you and who He means for you to be. So who do you say Jesus is? It’s life’s biggest question. God wants to give you a revelation of who you are too. He wants to show you your value now, and He wants to open your eyes to who you can become in Him. Jesus made it possible for our heavenly Father to send the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit to dwell within you to be your Counsellor, Comforter and Teacher. You have all you need to be who God meant you to be. Stop talking about who you are not and what you cannot do, and start listening to what God says about your life. Stop labelling yourself, and start letting God do whatever He wants in, through, and with you. Dead to self, alive to Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. GOD AS A TRI-UNITY IS FUNDAMENTAL TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HIS UNIVERSE
God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are each equally and eternally the one true God.
God is Love, is probably the most important claim Christians make about our Creator, and yet, without the Trinity it is incomprehensible. A perfectly loving Being cannot perfectly love if He is not sharing that love with at least one other, since perfect love exists between two distinct entities. Love demands a subject who loves and an object that is loved. Because God is immutable and self sufficient (His aseity) requires that His love is not dependent upon the existence of creatures (anything created).
By observing the Universe God created, we can see this tri-unity expressed in every aspect of that creation.
The Father is the Thought behind it, the Son is the Word calling it forth, and the Spirit is the Deed making it a reality.
We are made in God’s image and in God’s likeness so is it any wonder we are a Trinity – Spirit, Soul and Body. Is it also any wonder, that God established the family, the basic structure for mankind as a Trinity – Husband, Wife and Children.
God’s universe is a Trinity – Matter, Space and Time and each of these is a Trinity: Matter – Solid, Liquid and Gas, Space – width, height and depth and Time – past, present and future.
God has given us so many wonderful examples in His creation of ONE being a TRINITY.
Water is two atoms of Hydrogen and one atom of Oxygen (H2O) and it can be a solid – ice, liquid – water and gas- steam.
Light – white is made up of three primary colours, red, green and blue.
The three Persons of the Trinity appear in a logical, causal order . The Father is the unseen, omnipresent Source of all being, revealed in and by the Son, experienced in and by the Holy Spirit. The Son proceeds from the Father, and the Spirit from the Son.
We “see” God and His great salvation by the Father sending the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, we then “experience” their reality by faith, through the indwelling presence of His Holy Spirit.
The truth of God’s tri-unity is ingrained in man’s very nature, but sadly he has often distorted it and substituted a false god or gods in its place.
LIFE IS ALL ABOUT US, OR IS IT?
‘I bound you to me,’ declares the LORD, ‘and made you my people’ – Why? – ‘for My renown and praise and honour.’ (Jeremiah 13.11)
‘Help us, O God our Saviour’ – Why? – ‘for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins’ – Why? – ‘for your name’s sake.’ (Psalm 79.9)
‘I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven’ – Why? – ‘on account of his name.’ (1 John 2.12)
Revival is waking up to the reality about God. The reality is, to put it simply, that we are not at the centre of the universe, God is. Ultimately, God is not here for our benefit, we are here for his. God created us for his benefit and glory. It is for his glory’s sake that he loves you enough to save you. That is why you may have such great assurance that God who began a good work in you will complete it – not because he is a merciful God and wouldn’t hurt a fly; not because he is love and love is never harsh, but because saving you will glorify him. Our salvation is not so much for our own benefit, but for his glory. His forgiveness of our sins is not so much for our relief, but for his honour. He loves us not so much for our pleasure, but for his praise.
If we love his glory above all else, He will love to glorify himself in flowing forth, – healing, saving, forgiving, refreshing, and multiplying those who flock to worship him in our churches, to see his glory in the sanctuary.
THE POWER IN A NAME
NO OTHER NAME HAS THE POWER OF JESUS NAME.
No other name can raise the dead, strengthen the living, save the lost, defeat the demons, delight the angels, and bear us through perilous times. Only Christ could offer Himself as a righteous sacrifice for sin and shed His blood as an everlasting atonement. If we reject Christ, we are rejecting the only possible means by which we can receive forgiveness and salvation.
NO OTHER NAME CAN SECURE ETERNAL LIFE
Of all the names on earth today, one name is more powerful than any other. Christians know it has the power to change lives, save lost souls, heal sick bodies, and secure eternity. It is the name of our beloved Saviour, Jesus.
