FOLAU’S FAITH COMPELLED HIM TO SHOUT A WARNING: REPENT

This article by Kel Richards appeared in this morning’s newspaper The Australian. Thousands of Australians will read and be challenged by this Gospel message. I never thought I would see the Gospel preached so well in a major Australian newspaper.

Israel Folau was only following God’s command:

“I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His Kingdom:  Preach the word!  Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all suffering and teaching.”  2 Timothy 4:1-2

Israel Folau criticised several groups in his Instagram post, but only one of them has complained.

“On April 10, Israel Folau posted on his Instagram account the following message: “Warning: Drunks, Homosexuals, Adulterers, Liars, Fornicators, Thieves, Atheists, Idolators: Hell Awaits You. Repent! Only Jesus Saves.” Next to this big, bold statement was the message: “Those that are living in Sin will end up in Hell unless you repent. Jesus Christ loves you and is giving you time to turn away from your sin and come to him.”

This eye-catching text was from the Bible, a loose paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

If someone else had posted this it would almost certainly have slipped under the radar. But Folau was being watched. Partly this is because of his brilliance as a footballer. He holds the record for the most tries scored in Super Rugby. In 2007 he won rugby league’s Dally M Rookie of the Year award for having scored the most tries in his debut year. In that same year he was the all-time youngest international player (he was 18 at the time).

But it looks as though Folau was also being watched for an opportunity to punish him for being a Christian; indeed, for being a blunt defender of the classic, conservative Christian faith.

The attack on Folau provoked an unexpected reaction: many Aussies were unhappy. They flooded open-line radio with calls in support of the right of Folau to hold and express his faith. This support was not limited to the 52.1 per cent of Australians who called themselves Christian in the 2016 census. A bucket load of callers took the line of “I don’t support what he said or the way he said it, but, hey the bloke’s obviously sincere so why is he being bashed up like this?”

Whether articulated or not, the underlying feeling of much of this response was: Australia is a free country. There was a distinct unease about the possibility of losing at least some degree of freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, freedom of belief and freedom of religion in this wide, brown land.

Tone deaf to the electorate Bill Shorten came down on the wrong side of this debate in the election campaign. Ignoring section 116 of the Constitution, which says there shall be no religious test for public office, Shorten demanded to know where Scott Morrison stood on the “gays/hell” issue. This blunder won him no friends (apart from the inner-city crowd, who were already on his side).

For Rugby Australia this is a lose-lose debate. The religious test they applied to Folau’s employment looked so unfair to him that he bypassed their internal appeal process as pointless and announced his intention to test them in the courts. So Rugby Australia now will either lose the court battle or lose its major sponsor. It has already lost its best player.

This is no storm in a tea cup: this is central to Australia’s character as a nation and raises three questions:
● Why should there be penalties for defending classical Christianity?
● Why do the rights of one group trump all other rights?
● What is the actual content of the view he is defending?

Let’s tackle them. First, why should there be penalties for defending classic, conservative Christianity? It’s not as though Christianity is an eccentric, minority belief system. It’s the largest faith on earth with 2.3 billion followers.

Some will say people can believe what they like in private but the views of classic Christianity do not belong in the public arena. The problem is that Jesus ruled out that option when he said: “Everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32-33)

So according to Jesus there is no such thing as private Christianity — there is only whole-of-life Christianity (public and private). Being a Christian means speaking about it. The Christian faith is part of our community and not a private matter.

Some politicians will say, “Well, we have to balance the rights of Christians to speak their faith aloud with the right of homosexuals not to be offended.” But from the words of Jesus it is clear that telling Christians they are not permitted to speak their faith aloud is telling them they are not permitted to be Christian.

Which brings us to the second question: why should the rights of one group trump all other rights? In this case it appears that the right of homosexuals not to be offended trumps the right of Christians to be as Christian as Jesus intended. It is especially interesting to note that Folau included eight groups in his post — none of the others has complained.

Surely the issue is that none of those seven other groups is demanding approval from everyone. On the whole, drunks, adulterers and the rest don’t care whether you approve or disapprove of them.

The homosexual community, however, appears not to be willing to accept disapproval. They may say all they want is tolerance. But that’s looking increasingly like a dishonest claim. They won’t, it seems, settle for anything short of complete approval.

Devout Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, atheists, Christians or Calathumpians don’t expect you to approve of them. They think they’re right, and if you believe differently you’re wrong — and they’re quite happy to debate this with you. But they don’t demand that you be legally compelled to approve of them, and legally silenced and punished if you disapprove.

Which brings us to the third question: what is the actual content of the view Folau is defending? Is it simply a system of morality? Folau lists eight behaviours that with the support of the Bible he says are proscribed — unacceptable to God — so it could certainly look like a question of morality.

In part this is a problem created by the brevity of social media posts, which don’t allow for nuance. But Folau himself is pointing beyond simple moral judgment when he writes that “Jesus Christ loves you and is giving you time to turn away from your sin and come to him”.

He is drawing attention to the fact that classical Christianity is certainly about judgment, but it is also about sacrifice and forgiveness. For 2000 years Christians have been calling it “good news” because the news that God loves you despite your behaviour and offers forgiveness can only count as very good news, indeed.

This good news Folau is talking about addresses the fact of death. The Christian world view says “people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

The point is that life is a journey and, like every journey, it has an end. It would be intelligent to give some thought to how and where the journey of life might end. You might protest: but we can’t know! It’s not possible to know what death will be like and whether we might survive it, and, if so, what that survival might be like.

Picture it as being like a group of travellers walking down a long country road. They fall into an argument about where the road will end. One of them may claim it ends at a steep cliff face and that’s it. Someone else may suggest it ends at a railway station where a train is waiting to take you back to the beginning so you can do the journey all over again. Yet another may suggest the road of life ends in a garden and, just like Christmas, everyone will get gifts and be happy. Another may argue there are two cities at the end of the road: a comfortable one (“heaven”) and a bleak one (“hell”) and that we can be switched from the bad option to the good option as a free gift because the lord of the road loves the travellers and has paid for the gift.

That is pretty much the state of the debate in the modern world, and that brings us back to Folau’s warning that we should avoid hell.

Cartoonists have had a lot of fun will hell through the years, picturing comic demons in red tights with pitchforks prodding hapless condemned souls into furnaces. However, all the amusing things, or silly things, that have ever been said about hell, or thought about hell, spring from our reluctance to seriously consider death — what it is and what it means.

Here’s a practical definition: death really means separation.

For a start, death is the separation of the mind (or soul if you prefer) from the body. Most human beings who have ever lived, from Plato to now, have believed that the mind (or soul) will survive this separation. If it doesn’t, then that answers our question of destination. But if it does it means we are on the right track in thinking about death as separation.

But there is another separation that counts as death: separation from God. In classical Christianity separation from God is spiritual death. This separation from God shows itself in a wide range of behaviours, including the eight behaviours listed by Folau in his Instagram post, but not limited to those eight. Because, according to the classically Christian world view, we are designed to function plugged in to God; once we are unplugged (separated) we are like an unplugged appliance — we don’t function properly or we don’t function at all.

That’s the danger Folau believed he was warning people against. He thought he was warning his followers that those people who ignore God, choose to be separated from God, are sending a message; are saying to God, “just leave me alone”. The danger is God will take them at their word: they will be cut off from God forever.

That being “cut off” is what hell is. Not the funny cartoons of demons with pitchforks but being cut off, isolated, exiled, expelled, separated. When Jesus himself pronounces judgment on people the words he says are “depart from me”, adding, “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:23).

But as Folau’s short post indicates, there is more to the story. Here’s the completion of those words from the Bible quoted above: “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many” (Hebrews 9:27-28).

There is the offer of God’s love and forgiveness and restoration: switching at life’s end from the bad option (separation, isolation, “hell”) to the good option (connection, community, “heaven”) as a free gift. From the point of view of classical Christianity, Folau saw people in danger and shouted out a warning. In other words, the intention of his message was the exact opposite to how it has been portrayed. And for that Folau is being punished.

THE LAST DAYS REMNANT CHURCH

“And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17

John tells us here that the church remnant in the “last days” will keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ and he repeats it just two chapters on with a reminder of the deadly tribulation facing Christians in the last seven years before Jesus return.

Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ”
“Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labours, and their works follow them.” Revelation 14:12-13

The good news is that Jesus reveals in Matthew 24:14 that the remnant (keeping His commandments, walking in holiness) will be active and achieving great things for Him, “And this gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in ALL the world as a witness to ALL nations, and then the end will come.” NOTE BOTH ALL’S

God is in the process of restoring all things, and we are going to be the generation that finally gets things right.  The greatest move of God of all time is going to happen right before the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and we are going to become the kind of bride that He deserves.  On our own, this is impossible, but with Him all things are possible.

PROPHESIED END TIMES GENOCIDE OF CHRISTIANS

Christian persecution ‘at near genocide levels,’ was the title of a May 3rd BBC report citing a lengthy interim study ordered by British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and led by Rev. Philip Mounstephen, the Bishop of Truro.

According to the BBC report, one in three people around the world suffer from religious persecution, with Christians being “the most persecuted religious group.”

“Christianity‘is at risk of disappearing’ in some parts of the world,” it noted, and “In some regions, the level and nature of persecution is arguably coming close to meeting the international definition of genocide, according to that adopted by the UN.”

The BBC report highlights “political correctness” as being especially responsible for the West’s indifference. However, the truth is, Jesus said in the “last days”, “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by the nations for My name’s sake.” Matthew 24:9. Satan knows his end is near, so it is all out spiritual warfare against Christians and Jews.

Jesus principal warning for the “end of the age” was “Take heed that no one deceives you” Matthew 24:4. Deception will be rife with many false prophets and teachers. Is this not what we are seeing in our day?

Although the BBC report has an entire heading titled and devoted to the impact of “political correctness,” ironically, it too succumbs to this contemporary Western malady. For while it did a fair job in highlighting the problem, it said nothing about its causes — not one word about who is persecuting Christians, or why.

The overwhelming majority of Christian persecution, however, occurs in Muslim majority nations. According to Open Doors’ World Watch List 2019 [WWL], which surveys the 50 nations where Christians are most persecuted, “Islamic oppression continues to impact millions of Christians.”

In seven of the absolute worst 10 nations, “Islamic oppression” is the cause of persecution. “For millions of Christians—particularly those who grew up Muslim or were born into Muslim families—openly following Jesus can have painful consequences,” including death.

Among the worst persecutors are those that rule according to Islamic law, or Sharia — which academics such as Georgetown University’s John Esposito insist is equitable and just. Once again, Scripture tells us that in the last days they will call evil good and good evil.

As I have suggested in previous posts, the Final Empire of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in Daniel 2 is a revived but divided fourth Empire (Ottoman Empire) – an Islamic Caliphate which the Antichrist will rule, partially overcoming the Sunni/Shia divide. Also, confirmation is given to Daniel with the terrifying Beast of Daniel 7 with teeth of iron and claws of bronze that devoured everything. Out of the beast grow ten horns – is a revived Islamic Caliphate.

‘Christianity is not permitted to exist’

In Afghanistan (ranked #2) , “Christianity is not permitted to exist,” says the WWL 2019, because it “is an Islamic state by constitution, which means government officials, ethnic group leaders, religious officials and citizens are hostile toward” Christians.

Similarly, in Somalia, (#3), “The Christian community is small and under constant threat of attack. Sharia law and Islam are enshrined in the country’s constitution, and the persecution of Christians almost always involves violence.”

In Iran (#9), “society is governed by Islamic law, which means the rights and professional possibilities for Christians are heavily restricted.”

Equally telling is that 38 of the 50 nations making the WWL 2019 are Muslim majority.

Here are a few of the more significant quotes from the Bishop of Truro’s report:

– “The persecution of Christians is perhaps at its most virulent in the region of the birthplace of Christianity—the Middle East & North Africa.”

“In countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Saudi Arabia the situation of Christians and other minorities has reached an alarming stage.”

– “The eradication of Christians and other minorities on pain of ‘the sword’ or other violent means was revealed to be the specific and stated objective of [Islamic] extremist groups in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, north-east Nigeria and the Philippines.”

– “There is mass violence which regularly expresses itself through the bombing of churches, as has been the case in countries such as Egypt, Pakistan, and Indonesia.”

– “The single-greatest threat to Christians [in Nigeria] … came from Islamist militant group Boko Haram, with US intelligence reports in 2015 suggesting that 200,000 Christians were at risk of being killed… Those worst affected included Christian women and girls ‘abducted, and forced to convert, enter forced marriages, sexual abuse and torture.’”

“An intent to erase all evidence of the Christian presence [in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, north-east Nigeria and the Philippines] was made plain by the removal of crosses, the destruction of Church buildings and other Church symbols. The killing and abduction of clergy represented a direct attack on the Church’s structure and leadership.”

– “Christianity now faces the possibility of being wiped-out in parts of the Middle East where its roots go back furthest. In Palestine, Christian numbers are below 1.5 percent; in Syria the Christian population has declined from 1.7 million in 2011 to below 450,000 and in Iraq, Christian numbers have slumped from 1.5 million before 2003 to below 120,000 today. Christianity is at risk of disappearing, representing a massive setback for plurality in the region.”

Fortunately, the BBC has stopped trying to minimise the spectre of Christian persecution as it did in 2013, when this situation was just starting to reach the boiling point.

IMPORTANCE OF UNITY WITHIN THE BODY OF CHRIST

Francis Chan speaks on “Peace in the Church.” This event is just one session of many in the 2019 Church Leaders Conference (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries). Francis talks about what it looks like for the church to be reconciled to God, to forgive one another as the Lord forgave, and to live out our message of reconciliation in a deeply-divided culture. You will need 50 minutes for this session.

CHURCH IN THE LAST DAYS

Expect God’s judgement on His church in these last days.

Both Ananias and Sapphira, together with Simon the sorcerer, attempted to introduce into the glory of the early Church corrupt values that would have defiled and greatly diminished her glory. However, it was stopped at the door and the glory was protected and allowed to increase.

In like manner, the true judgements of the Lord that produce holy fear and genuine repentance will return to the Church in these “last days”, so there can be a thorough cleansing and the glory of the Lord can be restored. Already, we see a great falling away in the church as it compromises with the world’s values. This will increase as tribulation builds: “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake” Matthew 24:9.  But we also know the “end times” church will receive Holy Spirit power, as in the early church as described in the Book of Acts, so that “this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached to all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14

Smith Wigglesworth prophesied correctly back in 1927:

“There must be special preparation for the return of Christ and at least half of all believers will be totally unprepared. We have to see that these days have to come before the Lord can come. There has to be a falling away. I want to speak to you very exactly. All the people which are pressing into and getting ready for this glorious attained place where they shall not be found naked, where they shall be blameless, where they shall be immovable, where they shall be purified by the power of the Word of God, have within them a consciousness of the very presence of God within, changing their very nature and preparing them for a greater thing and causing them to be ready for translation.

This is the day of purifying. This is the day of holiness. This is the day of separation. This is the day of waking. O God, let us wake today! Let the inner spirit wake into consciousness that God is calling us.”

What an appropriate call for our day. Let us prepare now for what Jesus is calling us to do preach the Gospel of the Kingdom to our circle of contacts, our community where God has placed us.

PROPHESIED GREAT FALLING AWAY IN CHURCHES

Barna Church Survey:

In a 2014 survey of all Christian and non-Christian clergy, over half of Protestant pastors (55%) admitted they were very concerned that religious freedom will become more restricted in the next five years; this percentage fell to below half (49% in the 2015/2016) and to one-third (34%) in 2017).”

At a time when religious liberties are under attack from every corner—from our children’s schools to our places of business and from the internet to the courts—how can it be that many Protestant pastors are less concerned now than before?

Sadly, much of it comes from Bible Colleges that no longer teach the inerrancy of God’s Word.

The teaching of evolution in schools and universities as fact has totally undermined the Genesis account of origins and the Biblical age of the earth, just 6000 plus years (www.creation.com).

Image result for pictures of Genesis as foundational book of Bible

The foundations for earths history are established in the Book of Genesis: Creation, Marriage, Family, The Fall, Judgement with Noah’s Catastrophic Worldwide Flood, Tower of Babel – new languages that established tribes and nations. God then establishes His nation, Israel, on a promise to one man, Abraham, all leading up to God’s Redemptive Plan, His Son, Jesus, entering earth’s history to provide a way for man to be born again into God’s Kingdom, for us to be reunited with our Heavenly Father in whom’s image we are made.

The World rejects God’s laws:

Gay marriage is law now in most Western nations and many of the large denominational churches have gay pastors and conduct gay marriages. Many pastors have compromised with the world’s values so why would they be concerned about the loss of religious freedom.

A significant portion of Scripture is “end times prophecy” so the good news for Christians is we know that in  the “last days” before Jesus return, there is a great falling away in the church, lawlessness increases and sin abounds, exactly what we see unfolding in our time.

We need to keep our focus on our role: “And this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14

THE GENERATION THAT REJECTS GOD

“So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. Now Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old… When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.” Judges 2: 7-10

Just one generation after Joshua died – they did not know the Lord, nor the work He had done to establish the nation of Israel.

We are living with the generation that has been taught in our schools and universities that the Cosmos evolved over billions of years and consequently there is no purpose or meaning to life. In academia, the Bible is considered to be a book of myths and legends. Even our Bible Colleges no longer teach the inerrancy of Scripture and have compromised with the world, now calling evil good and good evil.

Over 100 years ago now, when asked about the dangers facing the Christian church, Salvation Army Founder, William Booth replied,

“The chief danger that confronts the coming century will be religion without the Holy Spirit, Christianity without Christ, forgiveness without repentance, salvation without regeneration, politics without God, heaven without hell.” How right he was.

Target department stores are not only offering clothing and accessories celebrating the gay lifestyle to adults and children, but the company has also pledged to donate to a nonprofit that trains students and teachers in LGBT politics and advocacy.   On Target’s official website, it has several pages dedicated to merchandise that features the rainbow gay pride flag as well as messages intended to instil pride in the LGBT lifestyle.

Target stores donate $100K to LGBT nonprofit that promotes ‘inclusive’ K-12 schools

In addition, Target proclaims that it is donating $100,000 to GLSEN, an organisation founded in 1990 that claims to be “the leading national education organisation focused on ensuring safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ students.” According to GLSEN’s website, “Our mission is to create safe and affirming schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.” The organisation offers lesson plans for elementary school children on “gender-neutral” pronouns and terminology as part of the Common Core curriculum as well as introducing gender ideology to third-graders. GLSEN partners with the United Nations and like-minded groups in Canada, China, Ireland, Israel, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Coincidentally, Target chief marketing officer Rick Gomez also serves on GLSEN’s board of directors.

GLSEN provides training and resources to LGBTQ activists on school campuses while also advocating the homosexual cause in the political sphere. According to its website, “We accomplish our goals by working in hallways across the country — from Congress and the Department of Education to schools and district offices in your community — to improve school climate and champion LGBT issues in K-12 education”

Besides Target, major donors to GLSEN include Walt Disney, JP Morgan Chase and Co., HBO, Delta Airlines, Hollister, NBA, McDonald’s, AT&T, Morgan Stanley, Gucci, Bloomberg, and Colgate-Palmolive. Through its board members, GLSEN also maintains a relationship with the largest teachers union in the United States, the National Education Association.

GOD GIVES AUSTRALIA ONE LAST CHANCE TO REPENT

This is what Sid Maher of The Australian wrote on election night: “Scott Morrison has declared, I have always believed in miracles, as he pulled off one of the biggest electoral recoveries in modern history and retained government for the Coalition after emphatic swings to the government in Queensland and Tasmania dashed Bill Shorten’s hopes of becoming Prime Minister and forced his resignation as Labor leader.”

God orchestrated Scott Morrison’s (Liberal/N.P.) victory in Australia’s election last week. God’s hand was all over it, even to the significant events  that occurred prior to the election that played their part in the election win.

Scott Morrison’s opening remark in his speech acknowledging victory on election night of “I believe in miracles” makes it clear that he understood that right from his election as leader just 10 months previous, God had selected him to be His man to lead the Great South land of the Holy Spirit. The name given to this continent in 1606 by Capt. Fernandez de Quiros “Australia del Espiritu Santo”

On the morning of August 24th, Morrison had no idea he would be elected Leader of the Liberal Party. He played no part in the move to oust the then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. I am sure this is one of the reasons he was elected leader, and not Peter Dutton who had initiated the attempted coup d’etat.

Therefore, the number one miracle was Scott Morrison becoming Leader just 10 months prior to the election.

Events that I believe God orchestrated to ensure His man retained leadership of the nation.

  1. In October, Labor’s Penny Wong (Lesbian) hurriedly introduced a bill to the Senate to ensure that schools could not discriminate against students based on their sexuality. It provided no protection for Catholic/Christian schools to teach Christian values. Scott responded with “Labor is acting in bad faith on religious freedom in schools.” He was correct in saying, ” Labor are selling out the non-state school sector really significantly because of the voices in their own party room that are very anti-independent and non state schools.” With at least 35% of children in independent schools the timing of this bill prior to the election would have cost them votes. Also, Labor’s preoccupation with gender/transgender issues worried many mothers of school aged children.
  2. Political opponents came after Morrison’s faith, a Guardian Australia journalist warned us to “watch abortion rights in Australia go the way of the US under Morrison”.
  3. Both 1. and 2. caused Christians to realise their faith was under attack like never before and Christian prayer networks become active like never before. New prayer networks were initiated and and in my experience the intensity of the prayers was magnified. We now know how God responded to those prayers.
  4. Labor embraced Climate Change Ideology seemingly without concern for the cost. It’s negative approach to the Adani Coal Mining project in north Qld, caused it to lose possibly four seats in government. Quote from The Australian : The progressives treated Queensland with moralistic superiority — wanting Adani to be halted, dispatching anti-coal political convoys from the south and lecturing Queenslanders on how they should live. Labor’s reward is a primary vote of 27 per cent in the state.
  5. Probably, one of the most significant events, I believe, God used to get His man elected was Israel Falau’s tweet of Scripture about six weeks prior to the election. I wrote a post on this: “WE NEED MORE ISRAEL FOLAU’S : COURAGEOUS FOR CHRIST” on 26/04/2019. Take a read, it’s a great story. His Rugby achievements are many: in 2019, he became the record holder for most tries scored in Super Rugby history. His sacking over tweeting 1 Corinthians 6:9 resulted in Alan Jones a well respected media personality and former Australia Rugby coach taking up his cause in a powerful way. Let me quote from his article: “If you are a Christian, what Folau posted is truth. You might think it is out of date or not relevant or not contemporary, but a committed Christian believes in that, so could not in any way be offended. I was asked to write two pieces for The Australian last week. It is a matter of public record that they were viewed by more than 2.3 million people on my Facebook page. There were more than 10,000 individual comments. On The Australian’s website, where you can only comment if you are a subscriber, there were 1900 further individual comments. The overwhelming majority of these comments support Folau and his right to basic freedoms. All Folau has done is quote 2000-year-old scripture. If Folau is wrong, then do we burn the Bible?   What amazing insight for a non Christian. He can see where our society is headed and so now can many other conservative nominal Christians. It caused many Christians and non Christians to vote for Scott Morrison.
  6.  Just days before the election, in what can only be described as a desperate move, Bill Shorten, Opposition Leader, tried to make Scott’s faith an issue by criticising him for not speaking out against Israel Falau’s controversial act of quoting Scripture that offended homosexuals.  Conservative media reported it for what it was, a desperate attempt to win votes.
  7. For me the timing of the death of reforming leader Bob Hawke, one of Labor’s most successful and certainly popular Prime Ministers just two days before the election was important for two reasons: a) the testimonial given by Morrison for Hawk was heartfelt and authentic in stark contrast to the one given by Shorten. It also brought into sharp focus that Shorten as Labor leader was not in the same league as Hawk, nor for that matter, Morrison.

God brought to a close the Abbott-Turnbull era with Tony Abbott losing his seat in Warringah after 25 years. The Morrison era is launched. With Malcolm Turnbull and Tony Abbott out of parliament, Morrison has the chance to give the government and the Liberal Party a fresh start under a united team, a prospect virtually impossible last August. The stuff of Miracles. God is in control of nations and He is working our His purposes exactly as prophesied in His Word. The Bible that the world wants to reject.

WHAT DID JESUS SAY ABOUT THE TIME OF HIS SECOND COMING?

“And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars…. (Middle East). For nation will rise up against nation and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated for My name’s sake” Matthew 24:5-9

The following report from Washington, 10th May 2019, reveals a further escalation of tensions in the Middle East that cannot end well. As explained in previous posts, Muslims worldwide are expecting the imminent return of their Messiah (Mahdi). Muslims believe that the Mahdi is the restorer who will come at the end of time to establish the reign of Justice and righteousness. Moreover, Iran’s leaders believe that they can prepare the way for the Shiite Muslims awaited Messiah with cataclysmic events directed at Israel and America (The Great Satan). Are we seeing this in play in our time?

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon approved the deployment of a Patriot missile defence battery and a Navy ship to the Middle East amid increasing tensions between the United States and Iran.

The USS Arlington and a Patriot battery will join the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and a U.S. Air Force bomber task force, which were deployed earlier in the week to the region in response to “heightened Iranian readiness to conduct offensive operations.”

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln transits the Indian Ocean.

The additional U.S. forces to the Middle East is the Trump administration’s latest effort to pressure Tehran over its support for weapons proliferation and extremist groups in the Middle East.

“The Department of Defence continues to closely monitor the activities of the Iranian regime, their military and proxies. On Wednesday, Trump ordered new sanctions placed on Iranian metals, Tehran’s largest non-petroleum-related sources of export revenue. The U.S. also took aim at Iranian oil by effectively ordering countries worldwide to stop buying Tehran’s oil or face sanctions of their own.

Additionally, the U.S. designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. Iran responded with threats to close the Gulf’s Strait of Hormuz, where about a third of the world’s oil export vessels pass. The U.S. then announced it was expediting the deployment of a carrier strike group equipped with bomber aircraft to the region.

How wonderful it is to have God’s Word (The Bible) that reveals to us exactly what will unfold prior to Jesus second coming. Sadly, as prophesied, the world increasingly is rejecting God’s Word and His commands so cannot know the truth.

We are told in God’s Word that “where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty”. Liberty to do what? Liberty to do what I want, liberty to do what is wrong in God’s sight. No! It is a power to die for the truth. Do we trust God enough to face death gladly, if it His will for us at the time?

CHURCH IN THE END TIMES

“Realise this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.” (2 Timothy 3:1-9)

NOTE WELL: “holding to a form of godliness although they denied its power.” That line is not a description of the world; it is of a faithless, powerless, fruitless church! The light went out in the Church and the world got dark.

“If the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” (Matthew 6:23)

One of the most destructive lies preached in many churches today is “In the last days the church will get brighter and brighter while the world gets darker and darker!

God’s word does reveal good news about the end times darkness and one of my favourite Scriptures in this regard is in Isaiah.

“Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; But the Lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness
of your rising.” (Isaiah 60:1-3)

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

We need to consider how we can serve others in extraordinary ways. How can we do ordinary things in extraordinary ways? Perhaps for business people, it is how you serve your customers. Workers how you go the extra mile for your boss, so that he asks you why you are doing it, and as a result you have the honour of bringing glory and honour to your heavenly Father.

Maybe this will light up the darkness, illuminate cities and shift atmospheres? Might it be that meeting the simple, felt needs of our cities in extraordinary ways is what will drag communities out of the cesspool of despair into the wellspring of hope?  I believe it will! Jesus told us “this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14
