Socialists, leftists, and deranged Trump haters claim that he is concerned about profits and not people. Yes! the virus is taking lives but the mortality rate may turn out to be no more than a bad year of influenza virus. The destruction of a nation by prolonged periods of mass unemployment also takes lives. Recall that 40,000 Americans committed suicide during the Great Depression. During the first year of the Great Depression, the U.S. suicide rate surged from about 14 per 100,000 people to 18 per 100,000. In 1932—the last full year of the depression—the suicide rate reached its all-time high of 22 per 100,000. This does not take into account the numbers of people whose lives were shortened due to malnutrition and depression. Thus Trump is right we need to balance how we deal with this virus with how we keep a nation afloat in tough times.
