BEING READY FOR WHAT GOD HAS IN STORE FOR US

If the Parable of the Ten Virgins tells us anything, it is this: There are reserves you cannot borrow at midnight. When the cry goes out, you do not get handed clarity. You do not suddenly become steady. You do not wake up and magically think straight.

The midnight hour does not create oil. It reveals whether you have it or not. All Christians have received the Holy Spirit to be there counsellor, comforter and teacher. However, we can quench His work in our life when we do our own thing and grieve Him. Even Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane had to say not my will but the Father’s will be done “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.Luke 22:42. At all times we need to be filled with the Spirit and allow Him to direct our steps. “When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.Matthew 10:19-20. It is a conscious decision to be filled with the Spirit and half the virgins did not apply themselves to that task, to keep their lamps full.

Because the end of the age is near we need to be ready, watchful. Peter says it as plainly as anyone: “The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.” That sentence alone should reset how most of us think about watchfulness. Prayer of thanksgiving to the Father for sending the Holy Spirit to guide our every step.

And before that, Peter says, “Prepare your minds for action… being sober-minded, set your hope fully…” That means sobriety is not passive. It is a prepared mind. A directed hope. A disciplined inner life. Paul says the same thing from another angle: “God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.2 Tim. 1:7 Fear is not discernment. Fear is the wrong operating system.

Then Philippians grounds it even further. “The peace of God guards your hearts and your minds in Christ JesusPhil. 4:7. Guards them. Peace is one of the nine fruits of the Spirit.

Because the end of the age will increase two things at the same time: Deception and fear. Foggy minds are easy prey for both. Seek God. Face reality. Not one or the other. Both. Scripture never separates them. Peter ties sobriety to prayer because you cannot pray clearly if your mind is spinning. Jesus says “watch and pray” in the same breath. Watchfulness is not scrolling. It is attention in the presence of God. But Scripture also pulls us into honesty. “Search me.” “Try me.” “See if there is any wicked way in me.” That is not denial. That is naming what is actually there. Your body. Your stress. Your fear. Your relationships. Your patterns. Your motives. Your wounds. Your temptations.

Your next faithful step can only be taken when guided by the Holy Spirit.
